Predictions are made left and right wherein the Philippines is surely be in one of the most severely affected areas, with its archipelagic formation and strategic location, there’s no doubt, time will take its chance to hit the pearl of the orient by one of the major climatic and catastrophic environment events in few years time.

Our climate has gone through huge dramatic changes and becomes even more unpredictable as unusual weather condition began to occur. With extremely hot temperature and unusual heavy rains on the midsummer accompanied by the flooded streets and even worse as landslide in the mountain areas, not to mention the rise in sea water level; it is but the furious warning signs along with its fatal effects which is synonymous to the so called Global Warming.

We heard it on national television from different network channels starting from news updates, commercials, up to the different talk shows. There are Earth Jam joined by 20 bands held in Quezon City, the Earth Hour and the annual celebration of the Earth day. We also have “Signos” hosted by Richard Gutierrez and other documentary films and segments. These are the various advertisements and programs or advocacy campaign against the threat on the Greenhouse effects which we can now experience gradually today. And all these have only one message and that is to reach us, people, living in the same community, in the same environment and it is our call to stop the pretentious Global Warming.

Our ecosystem needs justice from the imbalance that we have created. The imbalance that causes severe illness to our environment brought about by the excessive and abusive human activities. The earth calls for our help and it is us who should be caught for the blame with the different disasters we experienced and felt. Now is the right time to make a move. It’s not yet too late for its cure and not yet too late for its preventive measure.

In many simple ways we can actually make a difference to save the earth from deterioration and from further devastation. We can practice and do things in an eco-friendly way and they are as follows:

• Unplug appliances and Electric Items when not in use.
• Reduce, re-use, recycle
• Segregate waste materials from biodegradable to non-biodegradable
• Do not throw your garbage anywhere
• Plant a tree
• Volunteer in local clean-ups in the community
• Let your clothes dry by hanging it on air instead of using your dryer
• Wash your clothes with your hands instead of using washing machines if you will wash few clothes only
• Carpool- or just commute whenever you will go to other places from time to time instead of using your own car all the time
• Take a short shower, do not waste water.

We should remember: “We did not inherit our environment from our parents, we actually owe it to our children,” a simple yet meaningful tagline that would help us changes our views in response to the way we live in our world today. And let us not wait to experience those various disasters which could be a life threatening experience for us to become a “more concerned citizen.”
